The Bracken Control Group (BCG), coordinated by the Heather Trust, has been set up to fight the EU ban on the use of the herbicide Asulam, the only marketed herbicide effective in the controlling the spread of bracken. This is, of course, a matter of great concern to farmers, as it should all of us who value the fells and the three Torver Commons. Director of Park Services, Bob Cartwright, represents the Lake District National Park on the group and Arnold Lancaster has signed on for 'Farmers and representative organisations'.
An e-petition to HM Government has been rejected because "It did not have a clear statement explaining what action you want the government to take". Telling the EU to stuff their ban might seem obvious to you and me, but apparently not to HM Government.
You can contact Bob Cartwright (BobCartwright@lakedistrict.gov.uk ) or direct any enquiries to Torver Website Admin and I will forward them as appropriate.
