19th May 2017        Cumbria Trading Standards   -  Hoax HMRC calls
Cumbria Trading Standards are warning residents in South Lakeland area to be on their guard after several residents reported getting hoax calls from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).  The call (which is usually left as an answerphone message), warns householders they will be sued by HMRC unless they contact a specific number and hand over a large sum of money. This scam is becoming widely reported and seems to be targeting older people.

5th May 2017            Cumbria Trading Standards  -  rogue trader claiming to be from Trading Standards
Cumbria Trading Standards are warning householders to be on their guard after a resident was ‘cold called’ by a person claiming to be from Trading Standards.

The caller, who gave a name and a telephone number, stated that Trading Standards had taken banks to court and obtained refunds for secret and unlawful charges which banks had allegedly made. The caller then asked for the victim’s bank account details in order for the money to be repaid. In such cases when personal details are handed over money is usually withdrawn from the victim’s bank account.

Consumers should be extremely cautious when contacted by any cold callers and our advice is under no circumstances should you ever disclose personal or bank details over the telephone.

For advice on such issues or to report an incident call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk or you can contact the Police on 101.

You can also report scams to Action Fraud at http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ or you can call them on 0300 123 2040.
